It was a record-breaking year for the Scurry County Library summer reading program.
Participants in the program, which concluded Saturday, recorded a record 3,664 reading hours this summer, compared to 3,200 last year, Children’s Librarian Amy Hodges said.
“And the program this year was actually a week shorter,” Hodges said. “It was only seven weeks, compared to eight weeks last year. So we did pretty good.”
The top three finishers in each category were:
• Independent Readers — Archie Kerr, 113.75 hours; Teddy Kerr, 104.5 hours; Journey Benitez, 99.5 hours.
• Teens — Andrew McGraw, 116.25 hours; Chloe Hombrebueno, 111 hours; Jasmin Thamez, 51 hours.
• Read To Me — Yaretzi Torres, 102.75 hours; Wyatt and Haleigh Barnes, 40.75 hours; and Landry Strickland, 38 hours.
Awards were presented during Wednesday’s program.
All participants received certificates, while the top finishers in each category received prize packages. In addition, there were drawings for prizes such as a bicycle and wireless headphones.
Entertainment during the ceremony was provided by Tricia “Jolly Girl” Gregory.
