After a spike in positive test results late last week, Scurry County health officials reported no new cases of the virus on Monday and Tuesday. Since May 20, though, Scurry County officials reported 18 positive test results and two recovered cases for a total of 20 since the pandemic began.

They warned that the total could climb in the near future.

Officials said 182 tests were administered Monday. Scurry County Judge Dan Hicks said last week that the state would help conduct tests to employees and inmates at the law enforcement center.

On Tuesday afternoon, officials said there were 192 pending test results.

Chamber cancels Fourth of July Celebration

Snyder’s Chamber of Commerce has elected to cancel the annual Fourth of July Celebration in Towle Park.

According to a post on the Chamber’s Facebook page, due to the recent increase of positive COVID-19 cases in the community and the difficulties in following proper social distance guidelines in the park, the chamber board felt that cancellation was the safest option.

The post stated that the chamber had been weighing options for holding part of the celebration even after the carnival announced it would not come this year, but decided that the booths in the Armory, live music performances and parade would provide too much opportunity for the spread of the virus.

“Although it breaks our hearts, our number one concern for us is the safety of the community. We hope everyone has a safe and happy 4th of July with your loved ones,” it stated.

Restaurants closing dining rooms

After Scurry County’s spike in COVID-19 cases this weekend, several local restaurants are re-closing their dining rooms once more and focusing on delivery and carryout.

Among the restaurants the newspaper spoke with, those closing their dining rooms are Mrs. Kathy’s Southern Comforts, Gran & Pop’s BBQ and Burgers, Polynesian Gardens, Ponderosa Restaurant and Mrs. Kathy’s Apple of my Pie.

McDonald’s, J316 Downtown Coffee House and Cardinal Cafe are remaining open for dine-in.

No changes yet for local banks

Local banks, including Prosperity Bank, Community Bank, West Texas State Bank and AimBank report that they are tentatively continuing with business as usual, although that could change any day if directives from the banks’ corporate offices require changes.

First Bank and Trust is handling all calls through a corporate call center. The Scurry County School Federal Credit Union is limiting lobby access, handling all routine matters curbside.

Churches react

While some of Snyder’s churches, such as Snyder’s First Baptist Church, East Side Church of Christ, Trinity United Methodist Church, Lighthouse Assembly of God, and Avenue D Baptist Church plan to continue holding in-person services, others have opted keep their doors closed and continue the online services they offered during their initial closures. These include Calvary Baptist Church, Snyder First Assembly of God, Colonial Hill Baptist Church, 37th Street Church of Christ, First Presbyterian Church and First United Methodist Church.
