The Scurry County Health Unit is monitoring the two human cases of West Nile virus that have been confirmed in the Big Country over the past two weeks.
A Cisco woman was confirmed as having contracted the virus on Friday, a week after an Abilene man tested positive for West Nile.
The woman is currently being treated at Hendrick Medical Center in Abilene.
There are no confirmed cases of West Nile in Scurry County.
Scurry County Health Unit Director Dana Hartman said mosquito season is nearing its end, but until it is over, residents are advised to take the following precautions:
• Regularly drain standing water, including water collecting in empty cans, tires, buckets, clogged rain gutters and saucers under potted plants.
• Wear long sleeves and pants in the evening. Use an insect repellent that contains DEET, picaridin, IR3535, oil of lemon, eucalyptus and para-menthane-diol products.
• Make sure door, porch and window screens are in good condition.
