McCowen wins Pct. 3 runoff; Arrington claims county

Shawn McCowen won the Republican Party nomination for the Pct. 3 Scurry County Commissioners’ Court seat during Tuesday’s primary runoff election.
McCowen, who is currently the Ira ISD board of trustees’ president, defeated former Scurry County Commissioner Howard Limmer. McCowen finished with 350 votes (67.18 percent) while Limmer had 171 votes (32.82 percent).
McCowen received 185 early votes while Limmer had 76. Limmer received 17 mail-in  votes and McCowen had 10. On Tuesday, McCowen received 155 votes and Limmer received 78.
No Democrat filed to run for the position.
“I certainly thank everyone for their support and in the campaign I said I would do a good job, and I will. I won’t let the voters of Scurry County down” McCowen said. “There was an outstanding early vote turnout and that was unusual for a runoff election.”
In the Republican Party’s race for the District 19 U.S. House of Representatives’ seat, Jodey Arrington received 487 votes (50.05 percent) while Glen Robertson had 486 votes (49.95 percent). Arrington claimed the nomination with 25,214 votes (54 percent) while Robertson finished with 21,769 votes (46 percent). No Democrat filed to run for the seat.
County Clerk Melody Appleton reported that 10.81 percent of the county’s 9,354 voters turned out for the election. A total of 987 people voted in the Republican primary and 24 voted in the Democratic primary.
Write-in candidates for local elections will be accepted through Aug. 26 at the Scurry County Judge’s office.
Here are the remaining results from Scurry County voting:
Republican Party
• Railroad Commissioner — Wayne Christian 511 votes (61.42 percent); Gary Gates 321 votes (38.58 percent). Christian won the statewide nomination.
• Judge, Court of Criminal Appeals, Place 2 — Mary Lou Keel 439 votes (54.33 percent); Ray Wheless 369 votes (45.67 percent). Keel won the statewide nomination.
• Judge, Court of Criminal Appeals, Place 5 — Scott Walker 511 votes (62.55 percent); Brent Webster 306 votes (37.45 percent). Walker won the statewide nomination.
Democratic Party
• Railroad Commissioner — Cody Garrett 13 votes (54.17 percent); Grady Yarbrough 11 votes (45.83 percent). Yarbrough won the statewide nomination.
