As Monday’s deadline to file for the upcoming Republican and Democratic primaries draws closer, another contested race is materializing in Scurry County.
According to Scurry County Republican Chairman Drew Bullard, Jeff Gilbert will challenge incumbent Shawn McCowen to represent Precinct 3 on the commissioners court.
That race joins the contest for Precinct 1, where incumbent Terry Williams will be challenged by Bob May.
As of Friday, the other incumbents have filed without challengers: Jana Young, Tax Assessor Collector; Trey Wilson, Sheriff; and Michael Hartman, Scurry County Attorney.
132nd District Judge Ernie Armstrong and 132nd District Attorney Ben Smith file through the state.
There will also be a contested race for Scurry County Democratic Party chair on the Democratic primary ballot. Current chair Ed Vinson will be challenged by Lacey Franks.
Among the statewide races, incumbents State Sen. Charles Perry and Rep. Dustin Burrows have each filed without an opponent in the Republican primary, according to the Texas Secretary of State website.
Snyder’s Addison Perry-Franks has announced she will file for a spot on the Democratic primary ballot to represent District 83 in the Texas House.
Candidates have until 6 p.m. on Dec. 9 to file their paperwork for a spot on the primary ballots. Republican and Democratic primaries will take place on March 3, 2020. The primary elections will determine who represents each party in the general election, scheduled for Nov. 3, 2020.
