Snyder and parts of Scurry County are starting to get water-logged.
Thunderstorms returned to the area Friday night, dumping almost two inches of rainfall on an area still drying out from heavy rains received last weekend. The result of today’s rain was  flooding in several low-lying areas of the county — and even more rain is expected this weekend.
West Texas Mesonet reported that 1.79 inches of rain fell at Western Texas College and 1.72 inches were recorded at the SnTx Industrial Park. Combined with last weekend’s totals, more than five inches of precipitation has fallen on parts of Scurry County in the past seven days.
This morning, officials had placed barricades on several streets, including the 28th Street underpass of College Ave. near Deep Creek, the 1600 bock of 19th Street and the intersections of Ave. R and 13th Street and 13th Street and Ave. O. At least one motorist became stranded in high water, but no injuries were reported.
Scurry County is expected to receive little relief from Mother Nature the next few days. The National Weather Service (NWS) is forecasting a 70 percent chance of thunderstorms through today.
“Rain and thunderstorms are expected mainly this morning across the Permian Basin of West Texas,” a NWS bulletin stated. “The heaviest rains are expected across the northern and central Permian Basin. A few storms could also become strong to severe, producing large hail and damaging winds.”
The NWS forecasted a 50 percent chance of more rain Sunday, with a slight chance of rain possible through Tuesday.
In addition, cold weather is forecast to hit the area Monday, with a high temperature of 40 and a low near freezing predicted.
Other Friday night rainfall totals for the area include 1.2 inches at Fluvanna, 1.52 inches at Gail, 2.15 inches at Lake Alan Henry, 1.18 inches at Colorado City, 1.42 inches at Sweetwater, 1.9 inches at Post, 1.06 inches at Slaton, 1.74 inches at Andrews, 1.99 inches at Lamesa and 1.85 inches at Rotan.
