Scurry County residents leaving today or Thursday on Thanksgiving excursions shouldn’t have to contend with the high winds West Texas faced Tuesday, but rain might put a damper on travel plans, according to Michelle Schuldt, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service’s Midland office.
“(Today’s) high temperatures will be in the 40s,” she said.
“By Thursday, it’ll start warming up a little bit, but for the Snyder area, it looks like the high temperature will be about 49. So just a little bit of warm-up Thursday, but not a whole lot.”
Schuldt said the area has about a 50 percent chance of rain tonight, but that rain will be of the normal, wet variety, not frozen.
“It looks like the main precipitation opportunity will be later in the day (today), and then going into (tonight),” she said.
“Starting in the afternoon, going through Wednesday night and even into Thursday during the day. For the Snyder area, the low temperature for Thursday morning is supposed to be around 36, so right now we don’t have any frozen precipitation for your area.”
Just north of Scurry County, though, driving conditions could be more difficult.
A NWS special weather statement covering Garza, Lynn and Lubbock counties — as well as 21 other South Plains counties — stated: “A wintry mix will be possible late tonight extending into the morning hours of Thanksgiving Day.
The mix of wintry precipitation will include freezing rain, snow and sleet across the far Northwestern South Plains and mainly freezing rain and rain across the southern and central South Plains.
“Overall winter weather accumulation amounts will be light, however these conditions may still impact Thanksgiving holiday travelers across the region.”
