This time of year, the threat of wildfires is always real. Today, however, it has become urgent.

The National Weather Service’s (NWS) Midland bureau today issued a red flag warning, alerting residents to an “extreme fire danger” in the area.

The combination of dry conditions and high winds prompted the weather service to issue the warning.

“Strong, gusty winds will occur across southeast New Mexico and much of West Texas today,” the NWS alert stated. “Since relative humidities near 10 percent are expected, and fire danger very high too extreme due to temperatures 15 to 20 degrees above normal, a red flag warning is in effect for most of the forecast area.

The NWS categorized the situation as “very dangerous.”

“Strong winds and very low relative humidities, combined with above-normal temperatures, will create weather conditions favorable for the multiple occurrence of large fires,” the statement read. “Outdoor burning is not recommended.”

The red flag warning is in effect until 8 p.m. today, but the NWS advises residents to be wary of the threat of fire in the coming days.

“A cold front will bring cooler temperatures Friday, but very dry air will remain and gusty winds behind the front could create critical fire weather conditions,” the statement read.
