According to data from the Railroad Commission of Texas, oilfield activity in Scurry County continues to lag behind other areas in the Permian Basin, but is tracking fairly close to last year.
Scurry County oil wells produced 1 million barrels of crude oil in September, equaling August’s reported production. Last September, operators reported 1.2 million barrels of crude oil produced.
Year-to-date, production is tracking about 300,000 barrels behind last year, with 10.66 million barrels of crude oil produced in 2018 compared to 10.97 million barrels in 2017.
The commission issued 11 permits to drill new wells in Scurry County, four more than were issued last month. The commission issued 12 permits last October.
In districts 8 and 8A, which includes Scurry and the surrounding counties, 531 permits to drill new wells were issued in October, a slight increase from September’s 524 permits, but down from the 536 permits issued in August and the 639 permits issued in July.
Statewide, the commission issued a total of 1,149 original drilling permits in October compared to 997 in October 2017. The October 2018 total included 1,051 permits to drill new oil or gas wells, 11 to re-enter plugged well bores and 87 for re-completions of existing well bores.
The breakdown of well types for those permits is 271 oil, 64 gas, 729 oil or gas, 77 injection, two service and six other permits.
In October, the commission staff processed 987 oil, 170 gas, 49 injection and seven other completions compared to 257 oil, 91 gas, 39 injection and four other completions in October 2017.
Total well completions processed for 2018 year-to-date are 9,254, up from 5,799 recorded during the same time period in 2017.
Scurry County operators reported 61 completions in October, three times as many as were reported in September. In October 2017 operators reported 11 completions. Many of the completions were listed as “well record only,” and included temporarily abandoned wells and wells that have been completed but not activated.
In districts 8 and 8A, 531 completions were reported in October, nearly doubling September’s 295 completions.
Statewide production during September 2018 as reported to the commission was 85.1 million barrels of crude oil and 591,183,972 mcf (thousand cubic feet) of total gas from oil and gas wells.
These preliminary figures are based on production volumes reported by operators and will be updated as late and corrected production reports are received.
Production reported to the commission for September 2017 was 69.2 million barrels of crude oil, updated to a current figure of 91.9 million barrels.
The commission reported that from October 2017 to September 2018, total Texas reported production was 1.209 billion barrels of crude oil and 8.3 trillion cubic feet of total gas.
September’s preliminary statewide crude oil production averaged more than 2.8 million barrels daily, compared to 2.3 million barrels in September 2017.
Production in September came from 179,138 oil wells and 90,974 gas wells.
Midland County maintained its position as the top producing county with 10.1 million barrels of crude oil, down from the August report of 10.7 million barrels of crude oil.
Karnes County operators reported 7.1 million barrels of crude oil produced, up slightly from August.
