In order to encourage Scurry County students to read over the summer vacation, the Scurry County Library began its annual summer reading programs on Monday.

Preventing the “summer slide” is the main objective of summer reading programs and for many children, the public library is the only community space available during the summer months where they can access free educational activities and programs.

This year’s “Imagine Your Story” program will reward children with awards and prize bags for logging a certain amount of time either reading or being read to, depending on their age. Registration will continue through July 17. Children’s Librarian Amy Hodges said that 115 kids have registered.

Kids will be able to turn in their first log when they get to 12 hours of reading time. Hodges said that she hopes that kids will get into the program to help maintain knowledge between school years.
