The Scurry County Library’s summer reading program is approaching its conclusion, with registration having ended on Friday.

Children’s Librarian Amy Hodges said that the program is going as well as can be expected given that the library has not been able to hold its usual entertainment for participants. Even with fewer participants, Hodges said that participants had still logged 560 hours of reading thus far.

Preventing the “summer slide” is the main objective of the summer reading program. With most students having been enrolled in distance learning since March, the slide had a chance to begin early. Hodges said she was glad the program is making a difference for the students who participated this year.

“At least some kids are reading,” she said.

The library will continue to collect logs until July 29, though Hodges is considering pushing the deadline back.
