With summer break almost halfway over, the start of a new school year is fast approaching.

In preparation for the 2017-18 school year, registration for pre-kindergarten and kindergarten students will be held July 10-13.

“We had a pre-K and kindergarten roundup in April and had a great response,” said Canita Rhodes, Snyder Primary School principal. “However, we would like to give parents who did not take advantage of registering in April an opportunity to get their student registered before school starts.”

Rhodes said registering a student early has several advantages, including allowing parents to learn what to expect for the upcoming year.

Parents will be able to meet individually with their child’s teacher prior to the start of the school year to understand expectations and the school’s environment, she said. They also will be able to ask questions and get to know the teacher.

Registering early allows the student to start the school year alongside their classmates instead of coming in a day or two late. Parents should not expect for their child to start school the same day they register, Rhodes said.

It also gave the school an idea of how many teachers will be needed to prevent overcrowding.

For parents of a kindergarten student, registration only applies to students who are new to the district.

A new student is classified as a student who was not enrolled at a Snyder ISD campus during the 2016-17 school year.

Documents that need to be provided at the time of registration are the student’s Social Security card, birth certificate, shot record, parent’s ID and proof of residency in Snyder ISD, such as a utility bill.

For parents registering a pre-kindergarten student, the documents will need to be presented, along with proof of income, which is a federal requirement for all pre-kindergarten enrollees.

Registration will be held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the school’s main office. The school is located at 3601 El Paso Ave.
