For the 10th straight year, the Scurry County Pct. 2 Justice of the Peace office will participate in the statewide warrant roundup.
Judge Ricki Webb and her staff have been working on letters that were mailed today to people who need to clear outstanding warrants in her court. Webb said a list of more than 200 names who were mailed letter will be published in the weekend edition of the Snyder Daily News.
“The hardest part is getting organized,” Webb said.
She hopes that when people see their name in the newspaper that they will begin calling to clear the warrants. Last year, her office made more than $28,000 during the roundup period.
A portion of that money was returned to the county’s general fund.
“The fines are set by the state. The biggest costs are the court costs,” said Webb, adding that the money returned to the county helps every department.
There is one misconception people have about the roundup.
“The biggest misconception is that people think they will not be arrested,” Webb said. “They will be arrested.”
Webb said the majority of her warrants are for Texas Tech University students who travel on U.S. Hwy. 84. She said many of the violations are for speeding in excess of 100 miles per hour.
“A majority of (warrants) are for traffic violations,” she said. “I also have a lot of CDL tickets and those have some hefty fines. If they do not take care of that, it will effect their CDL.”
Webb’s office also handles tickets issued at the weigh station on U.S. Hwy. 84.
If a person sees their name in the newspaper or receives a letter, Webb said they can begin the process of clearing the warrant by paying the charges. Payments may be made at the Scurry County Courthouse Annex or by phone at 574-1352.
Anyone who does not clear the warrant prior to March 5 will be arrested, Webb said.
“We want you to clear these before that happens,” she said.
