Police: Think safety during the summer

As the weather warms up, more and more people are getting out of the house to enjoy the outdoors. But they’re not the only ones out and about this time of year.
Snyder police Lt. Mike Counts urged people to take extra care in keeping their possessions as theft-proof as possible.
“People need to make sure they keep their cars locked,” Counts said. “As it gets warmer, we’re getting a lot more people doing outdoor activities. Unfortunately, that means we’re seeing an increase in thefts from cars, so we are asking people to make sure their cars are locked and their valuables are stored in the trunk.”
Summertime also is when many families go out of town on vacation and Counts said they can take a few simple steps to help keep their home safe from burglars.
“If you’re going on vacation, talk to a friend or neighbor and see if they can keep an eye out on your home while you’re gone,” he said. “You can also call us and we’ll do close patrols of your neighborhood while you’re on vacation.”
Neighbors watching out for neighbors is very important during the summer months, Counts said.
“We encourage neighbors to help each other out,” he said. “If you see something suspicious going on, call us. It might be nothing, but it might be something serious, so don’t be afraid to call us.”
