Athletes from across West Texas are expected to descend on Snyder for a one-day competition next week when CrossFit Snyder hosts one of this year’s Granite Games Throwdowns.
“It’s great we got the opportunity to be an affiliate for hosting the Throwdown,” CrossFit Snyder owner Kendall Riggan said. “I am excited to bring people from all over West Texas to come to Snyder.”
Granite Games Throwdowns are annual competitions that give scaled athletes — who have been active in CrossFit for less than six months — and intermediate athletes the opportunity to compete in a one-day event with the chance to move on to the national Kill Cliff Granite Games Championship in June.
Sixty CrossFit affiliates across the country, including Snyder, will host regional Throwdown events Jan. 12.
Crossfit Snyder will host athletes from Lubbock, Sweetwater, Hobbs N.M., San Angelo, Midland and Odessa.
The event will start at 8 a.m. and will be an all-day event.
“Out of the 60 affiliates across the country, there are only five in Texas,” Riggan said. “So it’s a big deal that Snyder was picked to be an affiliate. I want to make this a fun event for everyone.”
The competition will be held at The Coliseum. Admission is free for the public.
Riggan said there are 45 teams registered, with 22 being from Snyder. She said up to three more teams may register.
Each team is made of three same-sex individuals.
“We are working really hard to make this a special event for the community and competitors,” she said. “I am grateful Granite Games provided the tools we needed to make it possible and I am very thankful for the volunteers. We are all just working really hard.”
