This year’s burgers and beans welcome home supper is taking on a different meaning for members of First United Methodist Church.

The church was contacted by the Snyder Chamber of Commerce to host the annual supper to kickoff the West Texas Western Swing Festival at The Coliseum on June 7. Chamber officials wanted to help the church raise money for Briella Hernandez and her family, who are members of the church.

Hernandez is being treated at St. Jude Children’s Hospital in Memphis for a brain tumor.

“We were just delighted,” said Linda Patterson, the church’s office manager.

All proceeds from the supper will be given to the family to help offset medical expenses.

Patterson said the church’s congregation has rallied around Hernandez’ family and this is not the first time it has sponsored a fundraiser.

On May 13, the church hosted a fish fry and church member Jenna Jones, who owns Amazing Cuts, held a fundraiser for the family. Combined, the two events raised more than $6,000 for the family.

“We had people give donations of $50 for a $10 plate,” Patterson said of the fish fry. “We want to help take care of this wonderful family.”

Carolyn Torres’ second grade class at Snyder Primary School raised more than $1,500 selling T-shirts for brain cancer awareness. All proceeds from the T-shirt sales went to the Hernandez family.

Patterson called the family a “bright light” in the church and several members expressed interest in helping during the annual festival supper.

Plates, which will include a hamburger, beans, dessert and drink, are $10 each. Meals may be purchased at the door. The supper will begin at 6 p.m. in the Westerner Room.

Following the supper, an informal jam session of Western Swing music will be held in The Coliseum.
