Approximately 40 people have registered for the fifth annual Running for the Heroes and runners may register until 8:30 a.m. Saturday at the race location in the Towle Park pavilion.
Scurry County Sheriff’s Deputy and event organizer Jeanette Pritchard said the number of runners registered at this point is close to the same as last year.
Runners who have registered may pick up race packets and shirts at the pavilion from 5:30-7 p.m. Friday. Runners may print a registration form at runningfortheheroes.org.
The 100-yard dash for toddlers and children will begin at 8 a.m. and the one-mile run and walk will begin immediately after. At 8:30 a.m., Pritchard said event organizers will recognize and honor all first responders, law enforcement officers, Texas Department of Criminal Justice correctional officers and jailers.
Organizers will then recognize Snyder police Cpl. Darrell Campbell and four other first responders who are this year’s special honorees. The other four being recognized are Texas Department of Public Safety Sgt. Karl Keesee, Westbrook Fire Chief Brandon Hale, Ackerly volunteer firefighter Jim Kays and Sgt. Korby Kennedy of the San Angelo Police Department. All the proceeds from the run will go to the five men who were injured or killed in the line of duty.
Pritchard said the event honors all first responders, not just the special honorees, and encourages all past and present first responders to come to the event and be recognized.
The 5K run will begin at 9 a.m. Knockerball of Abilene will be at Towle Park during the race Knockerball is a game where people run inside an inflatable ball and bumpt other participants. The cost is $5 per turn and all proceeds will go to the honorees.
In addition to the run and Knockerball, a bowling tournament will be held at Snyder Lanes and Grill beginning at 1 p.m. Saturday. Pritchard said five teams have registered for Bowling With the Badge. The cost is $100 for a team of four bowlers and two alternates.
Pritchard said rain would not stop the race unless there is lightning. Pritchard said organizers are still accepting volunteers.
