The Scurry County Sheriff’s Office and Snyder Police Department announced the names of the four first responders who will be honored at the fifth annual Running for the Heroes benefit 5K run at Towle Park on Saturday.
The run began in 2012 to help raise money for the medical bills of Snyder police Cpl. Darrell Campbell, who was shot and injured on July 11, 2011 while on duty. Over the years, Scurry County and Snyder law enforcement have extended the program to benefit first responders from around the state who have been injured or killed while on duty.
The money raised from the run and affiliated events is donated to those honored, as well as Campbell. Last year, five Lubbock police officers were honored.
This year’s honorees are:
• Sgt. Karl Keesee of the Texas Department of Public Safety in Brownwood, who was killed in a single-vehicle accident on Oct. 29, 2015.
• Brandon Hale, Westbrook Fire Chief, who was stabbed seven times on Sept. 10, 2015 and lost an eye as a result.
• Jim Kays, an Ackerly volunteer firefighter, who spent more than a month between University Medical Center and a rehabilitation facility following injuries suffered in a rollover while trying to respond to a fire on Feb. 10 in Borden County.
• Sgt. Korby Kennedy of the San Angelo Police Department, who was on his motorcycle, leading a parade of trailered speedboats on June 25, 2015, and was struck and killed by a vehicle pulling out of a driveway.
Excluding the costs of the event’s website, T-shirts and computerized timing chips, all the money raised will be donated to the first responders or to a foundation.
A 100-yard dash for ages two to six, a one-mile run for children, a one-mile walk for all ages and a 5K run for all ages will be held. The registration price for the 100-yard dash is $10, the price for the one-mile run is $15 and registration for the one-mile walk and 5K are each $20.
The events begin at 9 a.m. and will start at the Towle Park pavilion.
In addition to the run, the sheriff’s office is hosting a Bowling with the Badge bowling tournament at Snyder Lanes at 1 p.m. Saturday.
The entry fee is $100 for a team of four. Like the run, all proceeds from the tournament will go toward the first responders being honored.
