SACROC line blows out; six people treated at scene

A CO2 line blew out Friday afternoon at Kinder Morgan’s SACROC unit on CR 258.

“Upon discovery, the company quickly identified the leak and is working to isolate the impacted pipeline segment,” a company spokesperson wrote in an email.

Scurry County first responders, including Native Air, arrived at the scene at 1:30 p.m. 

Initial reports stated eight to 10 people were injured, including one person who had shrapnel in his leg and back. Scurry County EMS reported treating six people at the scene.

Kinder Morgan quickly set up a command center and escorted firefighters to the blowout area.

“The area has been secured and appropriate regulatory agencies are being notified,” the company said.

Kinder Morgan said air monitoring was conducted and by 3 p.m., 90-minutes after the blowout, firefighters were leaving the scene.

“As a precautionary measure, nearby residents were evacuated and have since been cleared to return home,” Kinder Morgan  at 4:15 p.m. Friday.

Residents in the area said the blowout felt like an earthquake.

The company is investigating the cause of the accident and quantity of the release.

Two Snyder Fire Department trucks were dispatched.
