The Scurry County 4-H program is gearing up for another year of activities.
Scurry County Family and Consumer Science Extension Agent Ronda White said the annual kickoff party, which will include 4-H registration, will feature games and refreshments beginning at 5:45 p.m. Sept. 10 at the Extension office located at 2605 Ave. M.
“Join us as we participate in many opportunities all year to give back to not only our local community, but also reach across the world to help others and make our world a better place,” White said.
The program offers a variety of activities that will allow third through 12th grade students to compete on the local, regional and state levels.
All club participants, including returning students, must register this year. The cost is $20 per student through Oct. 31 and $25 beginning Nov. 1.
Here is a look at the programs offered through 4-H:
• Livestock — Participants will learn how to care and show animals.
• Food Challenge — Participants will learn how to create a recipe and work as a team. White said this program is similar to the television show Chopped.
• Fashion — Participants will learn sewing skills while keeping up with fashion trends.
• Consumer Education — Participants will learn how to make decisions while working with a budget.
• Food and Nutrition — Participants will learn cooking techniques and how to eat healthy.
• Archery — Participants will learn how to operate a bow and arrow. White said the main focus will be safety. “Certified volunteers provide a safe environment for members to learn these skills to last a lifetime,” she said.
• Shooting Sports — Participants will learn how to operate firearms and compete in events throughout the region. Like archery, safety will be the emphasis of the program.
• Photography — Participants will learn how to use a camera, flash and other equipment from local professionals.
• Horse — Participants will learn nutrition needs, composition and how to care for a horse.
A booth for each program will be set up at the party and current participants will be able to answer questions about the program, White said.
Registration for Clover Kids will also be held during the kickoff party. The program is for “budding 4-H members in kindergarten through second grade,” White said.
Clover Kids will participate in crafts, art work and photo projects this year.
