With the increasing number of worldwide mass casualty events, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security launched the Stop the Bleed national campaign in 2015. The campaign trains civilians how to handle bleeding emergencies before first responders arrive on the scene.

Scurry County EMS will provide free Stop the Bleed training to the public March 31, which is also National Stop the Bleed Day.

“As first responders, it’ll take us five minutes to get there,” Scurry County EMS Paramedic Russel Thomas said. “With this training, you can feel confident to stop the bleeding before we arrive. You can be the first person to act in an emergency situation.”

The free training will be held at the EMS education center, which is located on the west side of the Towle Park armory. The door will be marked “Scurry County EMS.”

Four classes will be offered March 31: 8-10 a.m., 10 a.m. to noon, 1-3 p.m. and 3-5 p.m. All classes are free and open to the public.

Scurry County EMS offers free Stop the Bleed training for groups or organizations. To schedule a class, contact Thomas at 573-1912.
