Contest season is in full swing for the Snyder High School band as they recently competed in two contests.

Fourteen students competed at the region solo and ensemble contest Feb. 24 where three ensembles advanced to the state competition.

In ensembles, all three participating ensembles received superior ratings and will advance to the state contest in May.

The flute ensemble of Erika Chaparro, Adrianna Murillo, Kennedy Thompson and Anna-Grace Rush performed a class 1 piece titled The Comedians’ Gallop.

The clarinet ensemble of Nirvana Campos, Brailynne Garcia, Oriana Renshaw, Alondra Tovar, Emilie Hodge and Johnny Dean Maresch performed a class 1 piece titled Eine Kleine Nachtmusik.

The brass quartet of Trace Chapman, Abbey Stephens, Sam Ramirez and Georgiana Crist performed a Class 1 piece titled Brass Quartet No. 1.

Clarinet players Hodge and Tovar received superior ratings. Hodge played a Class 2 solo titled Introduction and Rondo, and Tovar played a Class 3 solo titled Serenade.

Also in solos, French horn player Crist and clarinet player Campos received excellent ratings. Crist performed a Class 1 solo titled Morceau de Concert Op. 94, and Campos played a Class 1 solo titled Concerto in Bb Major.

“Everybody’s individual and group efforts were great,” band director Jeremiah McCurdy said. “I have to extend a huge thanks to Mr. (Adrian) Santana who worked with the solos and ensembles while I worked with the rest of the band. He really helped shape them for contest.”

The band also traveled to a concert and sight-reading contest Feb. 28, where they performed Variation Overture, Old Scottish Melody and The Thunderer. The band received an average rating in concert and an excellent rating in sight-reading.

“We had a fight against eligibility this year where a lot of the students weren’t eligible to compete,” McCurdy said. “That makes it difficult to perform, but the students who went worked hard.”
