Three Snyder High School students — Anna Charlotte Lavers, Alanna Hurt and Sean Sanders — are in Austin this week for the third annual UIL State Congress.
The team qualified for the state competition at the district congressional debate held last year. Lavers, Hurt and Sanders will compete in the state tournament.  Shelby Randolph, SHS debate director, and student Sterling Lee are also in Austin with the team.
The debate is an individual contest in a large group setting, Randolph said.
The competition models the legislative process in the United States Congress.
Within the mock legislative assembly competition, contestants draft legislation submitted to the tournament and research the docket of bills and resolutions dealing with real-world social and political policies prior to the contest to prepare their speeches.
The students will participate in six hours of debate on the first day of contest. The top 21 will advance to finals, which will be held at the capitol, for another round of debate.
