More than 40 Snyder High School students earned career technology certifications during the recently completed school year.
Snyder ISD’s goal is that all graduates are ready for college, a career or the military by 2020 and Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction Dr. Rachael McClain said these certifications were a significant step toward achieving that goal.
“We began putting the (certification) courses in place last year, but this school year was the first time that we expanded it and students had the chance to work toward earning certifications all year,” McClain said. “We want all of our high school graduates to be college-, career- or military-ready by 2020. Right now, we’re at 52 percent and we feel we’re on track to meet that goal.”
Students were offered a wide range of industry certifications to pursue, ranging from automobile technology, emergency medical technician and sheet metal welding to commercial drone pilot, floral design, personal finance literacy and professional career preparedness.
During the 2018-19 school year, 45 seniors, or 28 percent of the class, earned industry certification, and McClain said those certificates will give the students a leg up as they enter the workforce.
“Almost all jobs today require some form of education or certification beyond high school,” she said. “By providing them as many options as we can, we believe this gives our students an advantage in the workplace or in college over someone who just has a high school diploma. We are dedicated to preparing them for life after high school to the greatest extent possible and we feel this is a great step in the right direction.”
McClain said certifications were still pending for students who participated in FAA commercial drone pilot, EMS basic and ASE maintenance light repair courses.
