What do you get when two pilots and a doctor walk into the room?
This year’s inductees into the Snyder High School theater department’s Hall of Honor.
Powers Boothe, Snyder High School class of 1966, who played a pilot in the movie Red Dawn, Barry Tubb, SHS class of 1981, who had a role in Top Gun, and Brad Maule, SHS class of 1970, who played Dr. Tony Jones on General Hospital, will each be inducted during the May 4 ceremony at Snyder High School.
Boothe’s wife, Pam Boothe, will attend on her late husband’s behalf.
“We’d love the community to come out and support the program and see why this is the crown jewel of Texas’ theater departments,” said Michael Rodriguez, a 1989 Snyder High School graduate.
As a senior, Boothe played Tommy Albright in the October 1965 Snyder High School production of Brigadoon. The previous spring he had been chosen best actor in Region III as part of Snyder’s one-act play production of The Importance of Being Earnest. He was selected by the Thespian Club as the best actor at Snyder High School for 1964-65.
As a junior, Maule played Common Man in Snyder’s 1969 one-act play entry, A Man for All Seasons. He was named to the all-star cast at the district competition, where the production earned first place honors. As a student, Maule said he “tried very hard to be a hippie, but was only mildly successful wearing bell bottom jeans and a Nehru jacket” he bought downtown.
During his senior year at Snyder High School, Tubb was an honorable mention cast member at the 1981 state one-act play competition for his performance as Inca King Atahuallpa in The Royal Hunt of the Sun. Tubb was named to the all-star cast at both the district and regional competitions.
In addition to the three individual honorees, the cast and crew of the state champion 1970 one-act play Elizabeth: The Queen, will be inducted and Jeanine Patterson will be honored for her longtime support of the theater department.
Rodriguez said the gala will begin with dinner at 4:30 p.m. in the Snyder High School cafeteria before a performance of this year’s state-qualifying one-act play A View From The Bridge in Worsham Auditorium.
Following the performance, the honorees will be inducted before participating in a panel discussion with the audience.
“The talent that will be on the stage this year is something everyone will want to see,” Rodriguez said.
Theater department Director Clark Reed, SHS class of 2003, said one of the goals with this year’s gala was to get the public involved.
“We’ve tried to take an orderly approach to get more of the community involved,” he said. “This department is special and unique. Everybody knows the legacy of this department. Everyone knows the legacy of Jerry Worsham. We want it to be a big deal and celebrate these people and this department.”
Tickets for the dinner, performance and ceremony are $25. Table sponsorships are available for $250 for a table of eight and $150 for a half-table. Tickets are available at Spanish Inn.
