After partnering with ResponsiveEd Solutions, Snyder Junior High School has made a few notable changes in its operations that will be implemented for the 2020-2021 school year.
Head of School Jerry Russell said that the junior high school staff will be trained on a new curriculum, called Bright Thinker, over the summer. He said that this curriculum would allow for students to progress at a pace that would be comfortable for them while also leaving the option for them to accelerate through their work if desired.
The school will also be using a block schedule in order to give students and teachers more class time rather than rushing through lessons.
Perhaps the most notable change is that a more comprehensive dress code will be implemented in the fall.
Shirts must be polo or oxford style and can be either short- or long-sleeved. The outside shirt color must be solid black, gold, gray or white. T-shirts, undershirts and camisoles of the same colors may be worn as well. See-through shirts are not acceptable.
Collars must be worn and visible at all times, and no more than two buttons on a shirt may be left unbuttoned. Brand logos may be no larger than two square inches, and the length of shirts must be within the boundaries between wrist and fingertips. Shirts hanging below fingertips will be required to be tucked in.
Jackets, crew necks, sweatshirts without hoods, cardigans and sweaters of a solid black, gold, gray or white color, or with a Snyder ISD logo, may be worn over collared shirts.
Shorts, pants and skirts should be solid tan, khaki or black and fitted at the waist and stride so as not to appear baggy. They must be worn at the waist level. Sagging will not be tolerated.
No stretchy material, leggings or sweat pants will be permitted. Dresses, skirts and shorts must be two inches above the knee or longer.
Students may wear belts with their pants, but no oversized belt buckles will be allowed. Belts should be solid black, brown or khaki.
Shoes must have closed toes and a back or back strap across the heel. Flip-flops, Crocs, slides, house shoes, slippers and shower shoes are not allowed. Shoes with heels higher than 2 inches are not allowed.
On spirit days, students will be permitted to wear Snyder ISD school spirit shirts, college shirts and dark denim blue jeans with no holes, rips or tears.
Spirit days are a reward, will be determined by Russell, and will usually be on Fridays. There will be no more than one spirit day in a school week.
Russell said that the policy would promote an academic environment that prepares students for professional life and contributes toward their personal development and social well-being. He said that studies have shown a number of positive benefits of standardized dress, including improved campus morale and reduced discipline violations, increased school pride and improved collaboration and teamwork among students.
