The Snyder Police Department welcomed one new officer and a veteran officer was promoted Tuesday.
Police Chief Terry Luecke announced the hiring of Joshua Reeves as the department’s newest officer and 11-year law enforcement veteran Gilbert Ramos was promoted to corporal.
Luecke said Reeves, a native of Vernon, will do a good job for the department.
“I look forward to him working with us and growing with us,” Luecke said.
Reeves said he grew up in Vernon wanting to be a firefighter and even volunteered for different departments. He entered law enforcement with the Oklahoma Juvenile Security office, but was encouraged by a friend to attend the Vernon College police academy.
He began the academy in September 2015 and graduated in May. Five months later, he has his first job with a police department.
“I am looking forward to working in Snyder. It feels like home,” he said.
Luecke said Ramos does “an excellent job” for the department and it was fitting to promote him.
Ramos left the department to work in the oilfield, but his wife, Amy, said he is back where he belongs.
“He went to work in the oilfield to provide for his family and now is back doing what he loves,” she said. “He is a hard worker and I could not be more proud of him.”
Even when Ramos was employed in the oilfield, Luecke said he would work for the department as a reserve.
Luecke said Ramos’ commitment to the department was one of the reasons he was promoted.
Ramos said he wants to work with officers on a daily basis.
“I hopefully will take this leadership role and train some of our officers to become better officers,” he said.
He said he was excited about the new opportunity and looks forward to working in a leadership position.
“I want to thank Chief Luecke for this opportunity and look forward to the future,” he said. “Snyder has always been good to me.”
