The race was on last week as Snyder ISD students competed in the 8th annual Earth Day Bottle Challenge.
Students from pre-kindergarten through 12th grade collected a total of 185,282 bottles — 18,399 more bottles than last year.
During Thursday’s district-wide assembly, Mayor Tony Wofford congratulated the students for their hard work and participation.
“I want to thank everyone who participated in this year’s challenge,” Wofford said. “Plastic bottles take about 1,000 years to degrade. That’s a lot of bottles. So I am proud, and I want to thank you all for trying to make our earth greener. I expect you all to do even better next year.”
Snyder Primary School won last year’s challenge and repeated the win this year, collecting 96,095 bottles.
At the primary school teams were based of the school’s house system.
Liderazgo’s  house collected 29,088 bottles, for first place. Uongozi’s house was second with 22,292 bottles. Comondo’s house was third with 19,393 bottles. Jido’s house was fourth with 15,782 bottles, and Ke alaka’I’s house collected a total of 9,540 bottles.

Seniors placed first (12,301), juniors second (8,643), sophomores third (3,685) and freshmen came in fourth with 40 bottles collected.
Snyder Junior High School collected 20,027 bottles. Teams were determined by their home room class.
There were  37 teams and the top three teams included Madolynne Greene’s class with 3,446 bottles, Anna Garza’s class with 2,692 bottles and Annie Ashlock’s class with 1,925 bottles.
Teachers and staff will hold celebrations for the winning teams and campuses.
“It’s become an important part of the year,” Snyder Primary School Principal Canita Rhodes said. “A lot of students work real hard to collect bottles weeks and months before the competition begins. They even get the community and their parents involved. The turnout for this is great. I am proud of my students, all the students that participated. This is a great thing.”
Sponsors for this year’s challenge included Snyder Recycling Center, West Central Texas Council of Governments, Don’s Inspection Service and Musslewhite Trucking.
A special thanks also went out to the Snyder High School Green Team for counting all 24,699 bottles the high school students brought.
