A Stanfield Elementary School student was diagnosed with bacterial meningitis, Snyder ISD announced Thursday.

“Snyder ISD has been in close contact with the Scurry County Health Unit, who is investigating this case,” according to a statement from the school district. “The Scurry County Health Unit has directed us, and has determined that there is no need for concern that other students are at risk of contracting meningitis due to exposure to this student.”

Stanfield Principal Thomas Fogleman said notices were sent home with students on Thursday and the custodial staff disinfected the areas where the student may have made contact.

Health unit officials said the child is six years old.

“After completion of the investigation, the local health unit, in conjunction with the state health department, has determined this case in non-contagious and is not considered a public health risk,” said Dana Hartman, director of the local health unit.

She said the health unit will continue to monitor the situation while the child is being treated.
