State championship volleyball teams, two athletes and coach to be inducted into Snyder Hall of Honor

Two Snyder athletes, two state championship teams and a longtime coach will be inducted into the Snyder Athletic Hall of Honor at the Martha Ann Woman’s Club Friday.

Tickets, which cost $25, are available at the Snyder ISD athletic office, the Snyder Chamber of Commerce, AimBank or from any Hall of Fame committee member. The luncheon will start at 11:30 a.m.

Bud Morgan, who played football and competed in track and field during the 1950s, will be inducted  posthumously. Morgan won the state championship in the low hurdles as a junior and senior. Harley Bynum earned letters in football, basketball, baseball and track and field. Snyder won the state volleyball championship in 1980 and 1981.

Tommy Doyle will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award. He was an assistant coach in football, basketball and track and field from 1976-81 and from 1985 until he retired in 2008

Morgan, a 1958 graduate, was selected to the high school all-American track and field team in 1958 when he had the fastest hurdles time in the nation. He was named to the all-district team as a junior and senior and was named the football team’s most valuable player as a senior.

Morgan attended North Texas State College on a track scholarship. He was the 220-yard hurdles national championship in 1959. Morgan transferred two years later to McMurry College and received a bachelor of science degree in 1963. He was a teacher and coach until retiring in San Angelo.

Bynum played for four coaches who are members of the Hall of Honor — Horrace Bostick (football), Ned Underwood (basketball), Speedy Moffett (baseball) and Dutch Stehley (track and field).

Bynum received a track and field scholarship to Howard County Junior College. He was second in the 120-yard high hurdles and fourth in the 300-yard low hurdles at the National Junior College Athletic Association meet in 1966. He continued his career at the University of Alabama and was inducted into the Alabama “A” Club for outstanding achievement in athletics.

Bynum was a high school and NCAA Division I baseball umpire for 17 years. He retired from umpiring in 1996.

The 1980 Snyder volleyball team had a 33-1 record and won the Class 4A state championship. Snyder was undefeated in district play with two wins over Monahans, which won the 1979 state championship. The Lady Tigers won 53 consecutive home matches, including 44 in district play.

Snyder defeated Cleburne and Lubbock Dunbar to win the regional tournament and received the top seed at the state tournament. The Lady Tigers defeated Laredo United and Corsicana at the state tournament.

Team members were Shauna Pate, Ann Melton, Kelly Dryden, Shanna Koonsman, Toni Elrod, Kirstin Selmon, Kathy Northcott, Lisa Cobb, Sherry Mayes, Sherri Rich, Sabrina Robertson, Becky Harrell and managers Tina Cannon and Lynn Robertson. Joyce Elrod was the head coach and Patty Grimmett was the assistant coach.

The 1981 Snyder volleyball team was 34-5 and won the Class 4A state championship. Snyder and Monahans tied for the district championship, but the Lady Tigers qualified for the playoffs by defeating Monahans in a playoff.

Snyder returned to the state tournament with wins over Everman and Borger at the regional tournament. The Lady Tigers defeated Waxahachie and South San Antonio West at the state tournament. 

Team members were Becky Pylant, Becky Harrell, Toni Elrod, Sabrina Robertson, Sherri Rich, Shana Koosman, Lisa Waller, Susie Lee, Kathy Northcott, Susan Brim, Dana Hines and managers Lynn Robertson, Shahala Blair and Tonya Neblett. Elrod was the head coach and Grimmett was the assistant coach.

Doyle played on Lamesa’s 1961 state championship boys’ basketball team and received a football scholarship to Texas Tech. He caught three touchdowns in a single game for the Red Raiders, which was a school record until 2000.

Doyle coached three years at Lamesa before joining head coach Mike Jenkins’ staff in 1976. He coached until 1981 before taking a break from education and resumed his coaching career in 1985, working on the staffs led Dennis Tomlison, David Baugh and Chad Rogers.
