Stock show to feature 101 competitors

A total of 101 Future Farmers of America (FFA) and 4-H Club members will show 269 animals during the 2016 Scurry County Junior Livestock Show next week at The Coliseum annex.
Ira ISD’s FFA chapter will have the most competitors with 30, followed by Hermleigh’s FFA chapter with 26. Snyder’s FFA chapter will have 21 competitors. The Scurry County 4-H Club will be represented by 24 members.
The pig show will have the most entries with 112, followed by goats with 67 and lambs with 55. Thirty-five steers have been entered in the show.
The show will begin with the pig weigh-ins at 4 p.m. Wednesday. Steers will be weighed in at 11 a.m. Thursday. Josh Brockman, of Montgomery, will judge Thursday’s pig show, which will begin with the showmanship competition at 3 p.m. The pig show will be held at 4 p.m.
Goats and lambs will be weighed beginning at 8 a.m. Friday. The lamb show, judged by Sterling City’s Richard Long, will begin at 1 p.m. and the goat show will follow. Chad Coburn, of Sterling City, will judge the lambs.
At 5 p.m. Friday, Coburn will judge the steer show.
At noon Saturday, a meal for buyers will be held in the Westerner Room of The Coliseum. Awards will be presented at 1:30 p.m. and will include the grand and reserve champion, who will receive buckles. Following the awards ceremony, the auction will begin inside The Coliseum.
Grand champion buckles were donated by the Harrell family (steer), in honor of Sonny Harrell, William and Julie Cotton (lamb), R&M Lawn and Landscaping (goat) and the John Stewart Family (pig). Reserve grand champion buckles were donated by the Harrell family (steer), in memory of Sonny Harrell, the Jeff Minor and Gilbert Sanchez families (lamb), Doug and Kathy Scott (goat) and Joe LaRoux Rental Properties (pig), in memory of Ronnie and Sheryl Lamb.
Showmanship awards will be presented to a senior and junior division competitor. The award will be presented to a competitor exhibiting outstanding sportsmanship and showmanship skills in and out of the show ring. 
Senior division awards were donated by Scurry County Farm Bureau (steer), Joe LaRoux Rental Properties (lamb), in memory of Ronnie and Sheryl Lamb, the Jay Callaway family (goat) and Wilson Motors (pig). Junior awards were donated by Lone Star Ag Credit of Sweetwater (steer), the Joe Campbell family (lamb), the Tyson Price family (goat) and InWest Retirement Solutions (pig).
A junior and senior division all-around exhibitor will also be named during the awards ceremony. The winner will be determined by demonstrating outstanding showmanship and sportsmanship in at least two species categories. The award is determined by a point-system based on an individual’s results in the highest six placing classes, breed and reserve breed champion, grand and reserve grand champion and showmanship. The award is sponsored by PM Feed and Grain.
The association will also honor seven seniors during the ceremony. They are Alex Martinez, Dylan Randolph and Gage Robertson, all of Hermleigh, Savannah Juarez and Jordan Ruiz, both of Ira, Jessica Fennell of Snyder, and Claire Hamlett of the Scurry County 4-H Club.
Scholarships scheduled to be presented are the Wanda Eicke Memorial Scholarship, Big Country Electric Scholarship, Grimmett Family Scholarship, Scurry County Junior Livestock Association/Western Texas College Facility Scholarship, Rose Sanchez Memorial Scholarship and First Bank & Trust Scholarship.
