A full day of bronc riding is scheduled Saturday at the Scurry County Rodeo Grounds on Gary Brewer Road.
The 13th annual Tom Butler Memorial Bronc Riding will return to Scurry County for the second straight year this weekend. Promoter Caleb Edwards said the event’s board of directors voted to make Snyder the permanent home. It was previously held in Post.
Gates will open at 10 a.m. Saturday and lunch will be served at 11 a.m. A calcutta featuring a 65/35 split is scheduled to begin at 12:30 p.m.
Events will include mutton busting for children eight and under, shetland bronc riding for children 12 and under, an all-female bronc riding event and the open bronc riding event.
Edwards said this will be the first time organizers have sanctioned an all-female event. He said the interest in female bronc riding has increased over the past several years.
The event will conclude with a dance featuring Bobby Flores and the Yellow Rose Band at 8:30 p.m.
Butler was killed in a car wreck near Amarillo in 2006 right after he won the national ranch cowboy bronc riding title, Edwards said.
He said the committee strives to keep the legacy of the working cowboy alive, bringing families together and furthering the education of high school seniors.
After last year’s bronc ride, the committee awarded $7,500 in scholarships to area seniors, including three from Scurry County.
“This year looks to be even better since we’ve added big money to all of the events, added an extra event and have the award-winning Bobby Flores and the Yellow Rose Band playing the dance,” Edwards said.
He said food trucks and vendors will be open throughout the day.
Tickets are $12 for the bronc riding and $12 for the dance, or $20 for both events. Children under five will be admitted into the dance for free.
