Trustees to discuss fate of North Elementary

If Snyder ISD officials have their way, the old North Elementary School building will soon be on the market.
When they meet Thursday, trustees will consider a resolution declaring the old campus as surplus property, which would allow Superintendent Dr. Eddie Bland to accept bids for the facility.
Officials have been looking for ways to divest themselves of the property for months. The old campus has been vacant since its former tenant, Scurry Community Services, now known as Jumpstart Enrichment for Tomorrow’s Students, moved to the Stanfield Family Enrichment Center.
North Elementary is currently in a state of disrepair. Clay Cade, director of administrative services, said district employees check on the building several times a week, but it remains a target for vandals and thieves.
The school district has considered demolishing the campus, but has been hesitant to do so because it would cost an estimated $150,000 to conduct asbestos abatement and level the building.
That leaves selling the building as the only other viable option.
If trustees approve the resolution Thursday, Bland would immediately solicit bids for the purchase of the campus.
Cade said no guidelines have been set as to when the bid process would begin or whether a minimum bid amount would be required.
He said that the school district would be free to accept or reject any bids.
In other business, trustees will consider updating an interlocal agreement with Scurry County concerning the school district’s use of Moffet and Cates fields in Towle Park. Currently, the county owns the fields and the school district pays to use them.
Cade said he didn’t expect any significant changes to the agreement.
Also, trustees will consider approving expenditures of about $45,000 for employees to fill potholes on school district parking lots and about $150,000 to purchase new furniture at Snyder Junior High School.
Other items the school board will consider include an adoption hearing for the English/language arts and reading curriculum, automotive equipment and the Mentoring Minds program.
Trustees may go into closed session to discuss personnel matters. Any action arising from those discussions will be taken in open session.
Thursday’s meeting will begin at 6 p.m. in the administration building board room. The meeting is open to the public and time has been set aside for public comment on non-agenda items.
