Unemployment rate up, jobs down in region

Scurry County’s unemployment rate continued its upward climb in November, and the workforce here continued to shrink, according to data from the Texas Workforce Commission (TWC).
Scurry County’s 3.3 percent unemployment rate was higher than last month’s 3.1 percent rate. According to TWC data, there were 6,386 people employed out of a 6,602 person workforce.
Last month there were 6,759 individuals in the workforce with 6,547 employed.
Last November, the workforce was 6,912 and of that, 6,708 individuals were employed. In November 2014, the workforce included 8,688 individuals and 8,449 were considered employed by TWC, leading to an unemployment rate of 2.8 percent.
November unemployment rates were general higher than October across the region.
Andrews County had the lowest unemployment rate in the region at 2.3 percent while Mitchell County had the highest at 4.0 percent.
Other county unemployment rates in the region were Borden, 2.4 percent; Garza, 2.7 percent; Nolan, 3.0 percent; Howard, 3.1 percent; Coke, 3.1 percent; Fisher, 3.3 percent; and Kent, 3.3 percent.
The Midland Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) recorded November’s lowest unemployment rate with a non-seasonally adjusted rate of 2.1 percent, followed by the Amarillo and Austin-Round Rock MSAs each with an adjusted rate of 2.5 percent.
The College Station-Bryan and Lubbock MSAs each recorded the third lowest rate at 2.6 percent.
The Texas seasonally adjusted unemployment rate held steady at 3.4 percent in November 2019. This marks the sixth consecutive month of record low unemployment in the state starting in June 2019.
