Unemployment rate rises, 10 employers have half of jobs

Scurry County’s unemployment rate is among the highest in the region, and while the workforce here is larger than last January, it is smaller than the past several months, according to data from the Texas Workforce Commission (TWC).
Scurry County’s 3.8 percent unemployment rate in January was higher than December’s 3.1 percent rate. According to TWC data, there were 6,482 people employed out of a 6,739 person workforce. 
There are 257 people reported as unemployed.
In December there were 6,737 individuals in the workforce with 6,527 employed and 210 unemployed.
Last January, the workforce was 6,686 and of that, 6,451 individuals were employed. In January 2015, the workforce included 8,409 individuals and 8,415 were considered employed by TWC, leading to an unemployment rate of 3.1 percent.
The makeup of Scurry County’s top employers, and their percentage of the workforce, has also changed over the years. According to information from the TWC, Snyder’s Top 10 employers are responsible for more than 50 percent of all the jobs here. 
In 2010, that percentage was 12.33 percent.
Last year, Snyder ISD was the top employer, with 375 employees, or 8.13 percent of the local workforce. Combined, the Top 10 employers have 2,683 employees, which is 50.02 percent of the workforce here.
In 2010, the Top 10 employers accounted for 2,028 jobs. Snyder ISD was the largest employer, with 349 employees, representing 2.12 percent of the local workforce.
Borden County had the lowest January unemployment rate in the region at 2.4 percent while Andrews County had the second lowest at 2.5 percent.
Other January county unemployment rates in the region were Kent, 3.8 percent; Garza, 3.4 percent; Nolan, 3.2 percent; Howard, 3.4 percent; Coke, 2.8 percent; Fisher, 3.0 percent; and Mitchell, 3.4 percent.
