Even though 2015 was a tough year economically in Scurry County, an anonymous donor who matched late donations on a two-to-one basis helped the United Way campaign reach its $120,000 goal.
According to Executive Secretary Peggy Vernon, more than $6,000 was donated during late December and when that was added to a few last-minute donations in early January, the campaign topped its goal.
In addition, all the money raised during the Jan. 23 West Texas State Bank furnishings sale will also be added to the total, Vernon said.
Furniture at the former bank building will be sold to the public and the bank agreed to donate all the money to the United Way campaign.
The additional funds means the nine agencies supported by the campaign will receive a bigger allotment than they originally expected.
“This is great because it has been such a tough, economically deprived year,” Vernon said.
She gives credit for the successful campaign to the challenge from the anonymous donor and the two-to-one challenge.
“That got us to our goal,” she said.
The United Way awards luncheon will be held at 11:30 a.m. Feb. 16 at the Martha Ann Woman’s Club.
In addition to the agencies receiving the first part of their allocations, four Jack and Ann Smartt awards will be presented.
The nine local agencies that the United Way supports are Gateway Family Services, Boy Scouts-Buffalo Trail Council, Girl Scouts of Texas-Oklahoma Plains, Snyder Day Care Center, the Snyder Volunteer Fire Department, the Scurry County Food Cupboard, West Texas Children’s Advocacy Center, Cancer Services Network and Snyder We Care.
