The Scurry County United Way board of directors tied a bow around its successful 2015 fundraising campaign at the annual awards luncheon Tuesday at Martha Ann Woman’s Club.
Generous doses of praise, awards and certificates were shared.
Bill Crist, Scurry County United Way president, praised donors and volunteers for exceeding the $120,000 goal by $10,000. He and Mark McClain, campaign chairman, praised the luncheon’s full house.
“Our excellent volunteers helped make the campaign a success,” Crist said.
Noting 2015 was a “tough year economically, we still exceeded our goal,” McClain said. He thanked all the donors, from the smallest to the largest, for making a positive impact in the community.
Five businesses received certificates for donating more than $10,000. They were Primary Utility Services, West Texas State Bank, United Supermarkets and its employees, Snyder Oncor employees and Snyder ISD and its faculty, staff and students.
After West Texas State Bank moved into its new home, the sale of furniture and paintings at the old bank were donated to the United Way. The items sold at a garage sale added more than $11,500 to United Way coffers.
Shirley Fritz spearheaded the sale and Terry Luecke helped catalog and price items. The volunteers who helped prepare last month’s sale were recognized.
Crist also thanked the anonymous donor who helped the campaign surpass its goal.
“We appreciate all of the money raised on behalf of the agencies,” Crist said.
Jack and Ann Smartt Awards were presented to Snyder Oncor employees, West Texas State Bank, Sonya Vinson and Terry Luecke.
The nine agencies supported by the campaign received the first of two allotment checks. Payouts at the luncheon totaled $100,000 of the $130,000 raised.
Recipients were Cancer Services Network, $5,083; Scurry County Food Cupboard, $5,421; West Texas Children’s Advocacy Center, $7,579; Snyder Fire Department, $2,704; Girls Scouts of Texas and Oklahoma, $6,058; Buffalo Trail District Boy Scouts, $6,058; Snyder Child Day Care Center, $39,039; Gateway Family Services, $27,079; and Snyder We Care, $3,250.
The agencies will receive the second allocation checks in the early fall after all the pledges and outstanding donations have been collected.
