For 65 years, Scurry County United Way has supported many local nonprofit agencies with the proceeds from its annual campaign.
The Buffalo Trail Council Boy Scouts is one of their long-time beneficiaries.
The Buffalo Trail Council Boy Scouts serves youth from kindergarten to 18 years of age across 18 West Texas counties, helping them develop leadership skills, community advocacy and physical fitness.
District Executive Anita Davidson said that United Way funding helps support the Boy Scouts’ Scoutreach Program. This program allows scouts to partner with other agencies, such as the Snyder Boys and Girls Club, to provide scouting opportunities for children in the community.
There are 39 Cub Scouts in the program, from kindergarten to 5th-grade children, and 15 boys in the Boy Scouts, along with 24 volunteers who help get scouts to meetings, make rank advancements, and learn about the Boy Scout values.
They even have a troop with five girls involved. “I don’t know that people recognize how community-involved the program is,” Davidson said.
“These kids are out doing trash pickup during summer. They’re out gathering food during the winter for the (Scurry County) Food Cupboard. They’re participating in your flag ceremonies during the Fourth of July. These kids and the adults leading these kids actually go out and do a lot of amazing things for the community.”
