The Scurry County United Way “I am Somebody” campaign has reached nearly half its goal, having raised $56,114 so far.
Thursday’s total represents 47.5 percent of the $118,000 goal. The public will be able to keep up with the campaign next week after the thermometer is placed on the courthouse lawn.
Over the next few weeks, the drive’s total will increase with three different fundraisers scheduled.
The first is the annual penny war at Ira ISD. Principal Dale Jones said students will begin bringing spare change to school on Monday and the winning class will be treated to a prize.
On Tuesday, the Western Texas College fall festival will be held from 6-8 p.m. at The Coliseum. The festival is for pre-kindergarten through fifth grade students.  Hand stamps are $35 for four children, $20 for two children and $12 for one child. A costume parade will begin at 6:15 p.m.
On Nov. 9-10, the campaign and KSNY will hold a two-day Business Blitz in which volunteers will contact businesses in an Amazing Race-style event to encourage them to partner with United Way by donating to the campaign.
“Help us reach our campaign goal of $118,000 to benefit the eight supported agencies of Scurry County United Way,” Executive Director Sheila Hale said.
Hale said she was pleased with the amount raised during the “I am Somebody” campaign to-date and that groups continue to hold fundraisers.
One of the reasons for the Business Blitz is to get more of the community involved in the campaign. She said businesses that donate to the campaign will receive a window cling showing their support of the campaign.
This year’s fundraising campaign will provide financial support to Scurry Community Services, Gateway Family Services, West Texas Children’s Advocacy Center, Buffalo Trail Boy Scouts, Texas-Oklahoma Plains Girl Scouts, Cancer Services Network, Scurry County Food Cupboard and the Snyder Volunteer Fire Department.
