Next weekend will be filled with Christmas cheer in Snyder.
Historic Scurry County, Inc.’s, annual Heritage Village Christmas event will kick off a weekend filled with holiday events. The annual event will be held from 5-8 p.m. Thursday.
The entertainment lineup includes students from Snyder Christian School, Snyder High School Jazz Band, Snyder High School choirs, folklorico dancers, Snyder Intermediate School choir and the Scurry County Senior Citizens Center kitchen band. There will be game booths for all ages and Santa Claus will visit the village.
Food and drinks will be available courtesy of United Supermarket, Farmers Insurance, Cogdell Memorial Hospital and Blake Fulenwider Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram. In addition, the Snyder Fire Department will have a fire ready to roast hot dogs or marshmallows for S’mores.
A bake sale sponsored by the Altruian Daughters, Atheneum Study Club, Cosmorama Club, Delta Kappa Gamma, Historic Scurry County, Inc., and the Scurry County Retired Teachers Association will be held.
Local first responders will be represented by mascots McGruff the Crime Dog (Snyder Police Department), Sparky (Snyder Fire Department) and Cell Phone Sally (Scurry County 9-1-1 Communications District).
In the days leading up to the event, three civic organizations competed for the Traveling Trophy by adorning Heritage Village buildings with Christmas decorations. The Rotary Club decorated the Cornelius-Dodson house, the Lions Club decorated the Redwood Chapel and the Snyder Community Beautification Association decorated the Dermott School building.
On Friday and Saturday, Snyder Trade Days will be held in the armory and barn in Towle Park. The event will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. Santa Claus will visit children from 9-11:30 a.m. Saturday.
At 2 p.m. Saturday at the Ritz Community Theater, the Tuesday Troupe Christmas Spectacular will feature second through eighth grade students performing Christmas songs.
Tuesday Troupe is a weekly program for students to learn how a community theatre works, both on the stage and behind the scenes.
Tickets for the production are $5 each.
The weekend activities will culminate with the Snyder Chamber of Commerce’s annual lighted Christmas parade. Events Coordinator Josh Ortegon said the parade’s theme will be “A Very Rudolph Christmas.”
The parade will begin at 6:30 p.m. Saturday from the Snyder Shopping Center. Entrants may begin lining up on the parking lot at 5:30 p.m.
There is no entry fee for the parade, but groups are asked to register by Friday, Ortegon said.
He said five groups have already signed up for the parade, including Snyder High School’s Pride of the West marching band. The top three entries will receive Chamber bucks.
“We would like you to join us by decorating your vehicle, trailer, golf cart or ATV with festive lights and decorations,” he said.
The parade will travel on College Ave. from Varsity Square to the downtown square where the fifth annual community Christmas tree lighting will be held in the downtown plaza.
Ortegon said Santa Claus will arrive by helicopter, weather permitting, and visit with children in the plaza.
