Snyder Volunteer Fire Department, Inc., is one of the agencies that will receive money from the 2015 Scurry County United Way campaign.
Spokesman Brad Bawcum said the United Way money helps the fire department purchase educational materials for children such as coloring books, fire hats, pencils, junior firefighter badges and other items to encourage fire prevention.
“Anything we can give back to the kids and get the fire prevention message out there, that’s a good thing,” Bawcum said. “All the money from the United Way campaign goes straight into its own funding account which is strictly for fire prevention education.”
The fire department welcomes tours of its facility and trucks and provides educational programs to schools, businesses, civic clubs and individuals. Bawcum said the department’s fire prevention programs reach approximately 1,000 children each year.
“We have classes from Snyder Elementary, Stanfield and Snyder Christian visit the station,” Bawcum said. “We also invite classes from Hermleigh and Ira to come visit, and sometimes we go to the schools and talk to the kids about fire safety and fire prevention.”
The fire department also provides fire suppression, inspection and fire prevention education to all county residents.
