Scurry County and most of West Texas will be under a winter weather warning beginning at 6 p.m. today, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).
The watch will expire at 6 a.m. Monday.
“A major winter storm is expected to track across the region late this weekend with very cold temperatures and heavy snow,” a NWS alert stated. “A strong cold front will move through the area during the day Saturday with temperatures falling below freezing after sunset.”
Precipitation is expected on Saturday. Forecasters said it will begin with rain and “transition to all snow Saturday night and continuing Sunday.”
Texas Department of Transportation cews were pre-treating U.S. Hwy. 84 in Scurry County today.
“Heavy snow accumulations are possible across the watch area. Strong winds will make for very cold wind chills and also create low visibilities due to blowing snow,” the alert stated. “Widespread snow accumulations four to eight inches with locally higher amounts possible.”
Wind chills will also be a threat during the next two days.
“The combination of strong north winds and bitterly cold temperatures will produce wind chills of zero to 10  degrees at times,” the alert stated. The weather service said anyone planning on traveling in West Texas or Southeast New Mexico “should consider alternate plans.”
