A construction worker planning to relocate to Snyder was the only bidder to install siding on the Western Texas College apartment complex.
During Monday’s board of trustees meeting, Robert Howington, owner of Welcome Home Builders, LLC, was awarded the contract with a maximum price of $189,000.
Chief Financial Officer Patricia Claxton said she and other members of the administrative staff will negotiate the contract in hopes of the project costing less than the maximum price.
Claxton said Howington plans to relocate to Snyder from the Brownwood/Bangs area and his references said his work was good.
He will only be working on the siding and the staff will look at further improvements of the interiors at a later date.
“It is severely outdated,” Claxton said of the interiors of the five units.
Board members did not nominate anyone to appear on the Scurry County Appraisal District ballot. Other county entities have nominated Jerry Boyd, Ronnie Anderson, Fred Cross, Clarence Spieker and Jay Waller to appear on the ballot.
The board also approved hiring Kyle Cooper as the men’s head basketball coach. Cooper’s wife, Nicole, is the director of international students.
The fall semester enrollment was announced and board members were told the number of part-time students dropped by nearly 200 compared to a year ago. Overall, the college had 2,009 students enrolled this year, down from 2,179 a year ago.
The number of Scurry County students taking advantage of the Opportunity Waiver program also dropped compared to a year ago.
This year, the college has 146 students in the program, down from 189 in the fall of 2018.
The small class report was also approved and the closed session to discuss personnel or to consult with the board’s attorney was canceled.
