Western Texas College officials are hoping the $15 million renovation project becomes a recruitment tool.
“The campus is looking good,” said Chief Operating Officer Mike Thornton. “(The contractors) hope to have all of the projects complete by the end of the month.”
Thornton said crews will remain on campus for several weeks to finish touch-up work. He reported the campus plant, ground maintenance work, domestic water line installation, air handling units and the fine arts theatre renovation are all complete.
Overall, Thornton said he is proud of the campus’ look.
“Just looking at it, it makes me very, very proud of the campus,” he said. “I think it will help in recruiting students.”
WTC President Dr. Barbara Beebe said former students are receiving pictures from current students.
“The students are very proud of what is going on,” she said.
The administration toured the projects with Teinert officials, the construction manager of the project, and Parkhill, Smith and Cooper, the architectural firm. A project punch list was reviewed by the group.
The dining hall/student center has the most work left, according to Thornton’s update. He said the second coat of paint has been put on the new addition and ceramic floor tiling is installed. Crews were scheduled to pour the sidewalk to the dining hall’s exterior this week.
“That addition is huge,” he said. “It’s more than twice the size of our existing dining hall.”
The coaches’ offices in the health/physical education building are complete and the locker rooms and showers are nearing completion.
The gym area is complete, Thornton said.
“When we have the open house (which has not been set), there will be a lot of memberships,” he said of the facility being open to the public.
Crews are cleaning up the plaza/corridor area and Thornton said landscaping work still needs to be completed.
