With students scheduled to arrive at Western Texas College (WTC) this weekend, the enrollment is down at this time, but officials are not worried.
As of Wednesday, 1,636 students have registered for fall semester classes, according to information provided by Britt Canada, the dean of institutional research and effectiveness. On Aug. 10, 2015, the college had 1,727 students enrolled. Canada said the 2015 total was the highest total since 2006, which were the latest numbers available.
“Our enrollment is slightly behind last year at this time, but by the time that classes start, we expect to have as many as we did last year,” Canada said.
On the first day of the 2015 fall semester, WTC had 2,083 students enrolled.
“Our dual-credit numbers are about 300 short of where they ended up last year and our inmate numbers are about 80 short of where they ended up last year,” Canada said.
He said WTC serves 50 school districts through the dual-credit program and each one has a different procedure for registering students.
“Often they have different personnel in charge of enrollment,” he said. “These factors contribute to the variability. We fully expect dual-credit to be equal to last year. We continue to enroll dual-credit students. Since we start classes before the public schools, dual-credit numbers start low and increase after high school students get started.”
