Skip Casey, a former school superintendent with almost a half-century of experience in education, was named interim superintendent of Hermleigh ISD.
During a special meeting today, Hermleigh ISD trustees unanimously voted to hire Casey to temporarily take the reins at the school district from Brent Dawson, who is resigning effective Oct. 5.
Casey, who was most recently superintendent at Coleman ISD for 18 years, will assume interim duties at Hermleigh effective Oct. 1.
“We received some great recommendations concerning his services,” Dawson said. “He’s done a great job in the past at other schools and he brings a great wealth of knowledge and experience to the job. We feel very confident and comfortable with his hiring.”
Casey has 48 years experience in the education field. Aside from Coleman ISD, he has worked at the Clyde, Stamford, Ira, Winters and Brock school districts during his career.
He said this part of the school year was an advantageous time for him to take over at Hermleigh.
“This is really an easy time to be an interim superintendent,” he said. “The budget’s already done and all you have to do is take care of the school until a permanent superintendent is hired.”
Another advantage Casey sees is that he said Hermleigh ISD is in very good shape, both financially and academically.
“What I’ve seen of this school district is that it’s very well run,” he said. “I’m not going to come down here and tear down things.”
There is no timetable set for naming a permanent superintendent. Dawson said trustees will establish parameters of the search process when they meet later this month.
No other business was considered during today’s meeting.
