Ernest Schattel

1923-2020

Ernest Schattel, 97, of Roscoe died Saturday, Aug. 22, 2020, at Lydale Memory Care in Abilene. 

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at McCoy Chapel of Memories in Sweetwater with the Rev. Ben reid officiating. Private family graveside services will follow at Lone Wolf Cemetery. Visitation for family and friends will be from 1 to 2 p.m. Monday.

Ernest was born Feb. 17, 1923, in Hermleigh to the late Emil and Louise Schattel. He graduated from Pyron High School in 1941, then attended North Texas Agriculture College for a year before serving in the U.S. Army Air Corps as a staff sergeant. When he returned, he finished and graduated from North Texas Agricultural College and then attended the University of Texas Arlington. 

He married Janet Moore Aug. 23, 1946, in Fort Worth. 

Ernest lived in the Roscoe area all of his life and was a farmer. He was a past member of B.P.O. Elks Lodge, the VFW and was a past director of the Indadale Co-op Gin. His hobbies included flying,, boating, fishing and traveling. He was an avid Roscoe Plowboys and Plowgirls fan.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Leo Schattel, Walter Schattel, Eugene Schattel and John Schattel; his sisters, Della Light and Evelyn Clifton; his brothers-in-law, Buford Light and Billy Joe Clifton; his sisters-in-law, Annabell Schattel, Louise Schattel and Fern Schattel; his nieces, Lisa Bowman and Dana Boggs; and his nephews, Emil Schattel and Paul William Schattel.

Survivors include his wife; and many nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to the Lione Wolf Cemetery Association, the West Texas Rehab Center, or to one's favorite charity. 

Pallbearers will be Glen Barton, Mark Moore, Don Kubena, Kenny Landfried, Ricky Bowman and Greg Burwick.
