David Lee Haywood

1925-2020

David Lee Haywood, 94, of Snyder died Wednesday, May 27, 2020, in Abilene, surrounded by family.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Wylie Baptist Church, 6097 Buffalo Gap Rd., with J.D. Hinson officiating. A time of visitation will follow immediately after the service. Interment will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the Texas State Veterans Cemetery. Services are under the direction of The Hamil Family Funeral Home in Abilene.

Dave was born in Amherst to Lee and Minnie Haywood on July 17, 1925. He attended school in Blackwell prior to joining the U.S. Navy on Feb. 3, 1943. He served as a Seaman First Class on the U.S.S. Portland from May 1943 to December 1945. 

Dave married the love of his life, Ouida Best, on March 7, 1948, in Portales, N.M. They moved to Snyder in 1950 where they raised their five children. Dave worked for Chevron Oil Company for 36 years before retiring in 1986. He was also a member of and served as a deacon at North College Avenue Baptist Church for many years. Dave was a God-fearing man, generous and caring, the type of man that would give you the shirt off of his back or help someone out with his last dime. He was a beloved husband, father, and proud Papaw to 13 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren and 10 great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years; his mother and father; one brother, Rufus Rawls; his sister, Patsy Humble; one granddaughter, Jennifer Birdwell; one grandson, Jared Foster; and one great-grandson, Logan Lay.

Survivors include four daughters, Druecilla Birdwell and husband, Jerry, of Abilene, Christine Foster and husband, Buddy, of Abilene, Jeana Blythe and husband, Dale, of Potosi, Brenda Adames and husband, Joe, of Snyder; and one son, David Earl Haywood and Iva Haywood of Snyder.

Honorary pallbearers will be Dave’s grandsons, Tanner Means, Ty Means, J.D. Adames, Stephen Adames, Clint Haywood and Damien Haywood.

The family suggest memorials be made to Kindred Hospice, 1665 Antilley Rd. Suite 300, Abilene, Texas, 79606, or to a favorite charity of one’s choice.

Michael Lee Stipe

1941- 2020

Michael Lee Stipe, 79, of Snyder died Thursday, May 29, 2020, in Lubbock.

Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Hillside Memorial Gardens. Family and friends are invited to attended. Mr. Bob Martin and Mr. Perry Westmoreland will officiate. No formal visitation will be held, but friends and family are welcome to attend a viewing and sign the memorial book at Bell-Cypert-Seale Funeral Home.

Mike was born on Jan. 23, 1941, in Arlington to Billie and Vernon Stipe. He was raised in Snyder, and met the love of his life, Wanda, at Snyder High School. Mike and Wanda were married for more than 59 years. Mike farmed for 25 years, and later worked and retired after over 20 years of service from YZ-Industries. He was a member of the 37th Street Church of Christ. He and his family enjoyed tractor pulling, riding motorcycles and camping together. During retirement, Mike enjoyed attending antique tractor shows and displaying his tractor and, lately, spending mornings with his coffee group. He took great pride in his family.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and by his brother-in-law, David Davis.

Survivors include his wife; a son, Curtis Stipe and wife, Ashley, of Prosper; a daughter, Karen Westmoreland and husband, Perry, of Snyder; grandchildren, Bryce Westmoreland of Snyder, Layton Westmoreland and wife, Samatha, of Abilene, Blake Massey of Pauls Valley, Okla. and Brooke Chilton and husband, Nathaniel, of McKinney; a sister, Marie Houk and husband, Robert, of Lake Kiowa; brothers, Robert Stipe and wife, Judy, of Hurst and Gary Stipe and wife, Connie, of Gail; sister-in-law, Kathy Davis of Snyder; and many nieces and nephews.
