Verline Calley
1933-2019
Elzie Verline Calley, a longtime resident of Scurry County, died Monday, Oct. 21, 2019 in Snyder after a brief illness.
Funeral service for Mrs. Calley will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at Bell-Cypert-Seale Funeral Home with Pastor Ben Moore, pastor of First Baptist Church of Ira, officiating. Burial will follow at Ira Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 6-7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Born on March 20, 1933 in Colorado City, she married Billy Calley on Oct. 14, 1951 in Forsan. Affectionately known by her three children as Mother, Momma or Mom, and as Granny by her grandchildren, she blessed her family with wisdom and prayer. Verline faithfully walked beside her husband and joyfully served her Lord and Savior, teaching vacation Bible school and Sunday school for more than 50 years. She was an avid and gifted painter and cook.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, her parents, Damon and Sylvia Light, and one sister, Leona Wiggins.
Survivors include one daughter, Gwen Nichols of Hurst; two sons and daughters-in-law, Myron and Cindy Calley and Darryl and Teena Calley, all of Snyder; nine grandchildren, Nicole Patrick and Ryan Bennett, Trey Patrick and his wife, Cati, Colin Patrick and his wife, Jenn, Kasey Faurie and her husband, Mike, Korby Calley and his wife, Angie, Brodie Calley and his wife, Brandyl, Amanda Bayer and her husband, Travis, Aryn Black and her husband, Cody, and Austin Calley and his wife, Mandi; 18 great-grandchildren; one sister, Ladell Paff of Hewitt; and several faithful caregivers.
Memorials may be made to The Gideons International, St. Jude Children’s Hospital or Ira First Baptist Church building fund.

John Houston Jr.
1939-2019
John C. Houston Jr., 80, died Monday, Oct. 21, 2019 in Colorado City.
Funeral service for Mr. Houston will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday in the Miller Family Funeral Home Chapel with Blain Shelton officiating. Burial will held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at City of Levelland Cemetery.
Born on April 28, 1939 in Mitchell County to John and Ruth (Grimes) Houston, he married Nita Culbert on Nov. 20, 1958 in Brownfield. She preceded him in death on Oct. 21, 2001. He enjoyed sitting while drinking his coffee, playing golf and baseball and John Wayne and western movies. 
He was also preceded in death by his parents, John and Ruth (Grimes) Houston, one sister, Helen Kitchens, and one brother, William Houston.
Survivors include one daughter, Angela Batchelor and her husband, Chris, of Hermleigh; one son, Johnny Houston and his wife, Shelly, of Richland, Wash.; three brothers, Charles Houston and his wife, Sharon, of Mansfield, Ricky Houston and his wife, Susie, of Winters and Mike Houston and his wife, Bedina, of Houston; one sister-in-law, Donna Houston of Odessa; two grandsons, Trevor Houston and his wife, Kaitlyn, of Columbia, Mo. and Aeric Batchelor and Alexis McNiel, of Snyder; two granddaughters, Kailee Houston of Richland, Wash. and Cassie Batchelor of Abilene; two great-grandchildren, Elijah and Elizabeth Houston, both of Columbia, Mo.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Nick Scott
1953-2019
Leslie N. “Nick” Scott, 66, of Lamesa, died Saturday, Oct. 12, 2019 in Lubbock following a brief illness.  
A private memorial service will be held at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of Sanders Funeral Home in Lubbock.
Born in Lamesa to Cecil and Pearl Ansley Scott on June 14, 1953, he was a graduate of Monterey High School and Texas Tech University. Nick subsequently became a licensed certified public accountant. In 2002, he completed his masters of education at Sul Ross State University and went on to postgraduate studies at the University of Texas, Permian Basin. After retiring as a CPA, Nick took on a challenging new career in education. In 2015, he retired after 19 years as a teacher, counselor and principal. Nick’s friends will remember his joyful sense of humor and his love of high school football and Texas Tech sports.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his stepfather, G.B. Morris, and his precious daughter-in-law, Randi Elliott Scott.
Survivors include his wife Susan (Bozeman) Scott; his son, Hunter Scott; his beloved grandchildren, Allie and Dylan; his sister, Charlotte Scott Cole and her husband, Ron, of San Antonio; his sister, Marsha Scott Stenger of San Antonio; his special cousins, Leslie Ansley of Lubbock, Bruce Ansley of Hampton, Va. and Robert Ansley of Austin; his nieces, Stephanie Spear and Jennifer Dingman; and his nephew, David Scott Stenger. Molly and Doc will miss him, too.
Memorials may be made to a Meals on Wheels organization, a non-profit close to Nick’s heart. In a land of plenty, he believed no one should be hungry.
