Ricky Austin, 59, died Saturday, Oct. 5, 2019 at Cogdell Memorial Hospital.
Funeral arrangements are pending at Bell-Cypert-Seale Funeral Home.

JoNell Smylie
Joe Nell “JoNell” Southern Smylie passed away at 87 years of age in Beaumont on Oct. 1, 2019 as a result of natural causes. A resident of Llano, she had recently moved to Beaumont to be closer to her family.
Funeral service for Mrs. Smylie will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday in the Waldrope-Hatfield-Hawthorne Funeral Chapel in Llano with Associate Pastor Tommie Tucker officiating.  Burial will follow at Llano Cemetery.
Joe Nell was born on July 14, 1932 in Stockdale to Woodrow Wilson “Pete” Southern and Gladys Marie McKinny. She was the older sister of Cmdr. (Ret.) Wilson Edwin Southern, recently deceased, and Wilburn Leslie Southern of Houston. She moved to McCamey, where she met the love of her life, James Calvin Smylie Jr., and married him on Dec. 29, 1956. Joe Nell was raised in the Methodist Church.  
She was valedictorian of Cuero High School at age 16 in 1949 and valedictorian of Southwest State Teachers College in San Marcos in 1952 at age 19, earning a bachelor of arts degree in English. She was a member of Alpha Chi, Kappa Delta Pi, Sigma Tau Delta and Aonian Literary Society. She went on to teach school in Corpus Christi, McCamey and Snyder for a total of 25 years. She retired from teaching at age 62 and moved to Llano.  
Places of residence were Stockdale, Floresville, Taft, Cuero, San Marcos, Corpus Christi, McCamey, Tyler, Farmington, N.M.; Everman, Snyder, Llano and finally Beaumont.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James Calvin Smylie Jr. on March 8, 2010; her brother, Wilson Edwin Southern on March 10, 2019; her sister-in-law, Betty L. Southern  on March 15, 2012; her father, Woodrow Wilson Southern on May 13, 1997; and her mother, Gladys Maree McKinny Leck on Jan. 29, 1997.
Joe Nell is survived by five children, 12 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, with one great-granddaughter on the way. Her children are James Wilson Smylie and his wife, Julie, of Lumberton, Glenn Stuart Smylie and his wife, Mary, of Quitman, Ark., John Calvin Smylie and his wife, Stacey, of San Antonio, Sue Ann Daywalt and her husband, Michael, of Stafford, Va. and Elaine Gomez and her husband, Rey, of Marble Falls. She is also survived by her brother, Wilburn Leslie Southern; her sisters-in-law Billie Southern, Eva Jean Smylie Bell and Caroline Smylie; and two cousins, Bill Hare and his  wife, Karen, and Mariann McMullan.
Pallbearers will be William Smylie, Steven Smylie, Kyle Manning, Mark Smylie, Christopher Smylie and Thomas Daywalt. Honorary pallbearers will be Calvin Smylie and Bill Hare.
The family would like to thank the staff and residents of Collier Park Senior Living and to the staff at St. Elizabeth Hospital for all the love and care shown toward our mother.
Memorials may be made to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research.
